RECOGNIZING THE IMPACT
OF DRUGS ON APARTMENT COMMUNITIES
Drug problems reach far beyond one rental
unit. They frustrate everyone in drug-infested neighborhoods. The neighbors
speak in hushed tones, will not let their children play outside for fear of a
drive-by shootings and refuse to walk the streets after dark. The impact of
these incidents upon the fabric of an apartment community and neighborhood is
devastating.
SIGNS THAT A DRUG PROBLEM MAY EXIST IN YOUR
APARTMENT OR NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY
RESIDENT / NEIGHBOR COMPLAINTS: A tenant
or neighbors may complain about fumes, visitors, automobile traffic or noise. I
would be a good idea to check out the reasons behind the sudden changes
DEGRADING PROPERTY AND GRAFFITI: :
Graffiti and an unkept property are warning signs. Gangs use graffiti to
advertise who, what, when and where drugs are for sale. Drug dealers
automatically gravitate toward communities that are sub standard and violate
housing codes. The intent of both owner and manager must be to keep the
property secure and attractive for legitimate renters who seek safe and
well-maintained housing.
CONTINUOUS POLICE PRESENCE: A
continued police presence is another warning sign. Drugs are normally associated
with violence and the nature of the violence is increasing.
